Pentecost

This week, as Theologians, we began to read about Pentecost. We unpicked the key events from the day of Pentecost, watched Lego Bible to understand this further and then each small group chose a section to freeze frame model a key event. Next lesson we will use these to help us build upon our knowledge!

Holy Week Art

Pastels, smudging, merging, charcoal, messy hands, sleeves rolled up, CHAOS (in the best way possible)!

Today was a powerful end to our RE unit on Salvation. We brainstormed everything we had learnt about Palm Sunday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday, including key words, emotions, possible colours and symbolism to consider what a piece of art would look like to reflect one of these three particular days. The artwork speaks for itself. The children were so reflective with choosing and explaining their card choices; colours of pastels and what symbolic imagery they were choosing to use.

Dichotomous Keys

In Science, we have been looking at classification. A major part of this learning is to understand how dichotomous keys work. To help Year 4 understand this, we decided to play around with creating these keys using liquorice all sorts! We then moved to create the keys about animals from our local environment. Take a look at the sweetie dichotomous keys!

Water Cycle

Yesterday, we learnt about the water cycle and the three main stages of the continuous journey:

  1. Evaporation
  2. Condensaton
  3. Precipitation

We sketched out the diagram to practise explaining the water cycle to a partner and then set up an experiment to see if we can make our own mini water cycle! We will be monitoring this closely over the next couple of weeks to see if we can spot some condensation and precipitation forming.

Year 4 Arts Celebration

On Thursday, we took part in our Year 4 art celebration. It was a culmination of all our artistic endeavours this academic year. We had a wide variety of performances from some excellent singing by 4C and 4H as well as some loud samba from 4A. We also showcased our amazing dances that we worked on with Miss Patchett. The second half saw us take in some spectacular dances from a professional troupe who performed pieces inspired by Southern India. We then took centre stage performing our brilliant pieces we have worked on as part of our Beat, Bones and Bodies sessions. The night ended with a mass dance with all the children performing a final piece that closed the curtain on a fabulous night. The children were so impressive and performed with such confidence showcasing their individual talents.

Mrs Stott summed it up, “A truly exceptional evening of excellence, confidence, pride, utter joy and definite flourishing.’

A trip to our local library

We loved our trip to the local library on Friday and Madeline, the librarian who showed us around, told Mr Ash that she was so impressed with each class’s behaviour and respectfulness. This is something we always hope for people to recognise in all children from ACE so it is lovely to hear it. Madeline encouraged all of us to go and get a free library card so that you can visit, try different genres and support your local community. We even took some photos as some children in class wanted to return and try them!

Shark Tank

This is our Shark Tank model text from our new writing unit. We were three days into learning the portal story. This is a genre of writing where the main character is teleported to another place and, hopefully (!), finds a way to return. I wonder if you can remember the model text and join it with it at home!

Dancing about identity and activism

We are so lucky to have Balbir Singh’s Dance Company in with us for the rest of this term. It has been a great start to the term where Bobak and Tricia have taught us new breakdancing techniques. We will showcase our finished dance at our Year 4-run event on Thursday 7th March 5:30-6:30pm in collaboration with the other Year 4 classes, alongside other professional musicians and artists. Jamie, a professional illustrator, is working with us to illustrate and animate a finished piece that he will showcase on the 7th March too. Check out his live drawing of the dancing from the last two weeks. The creativity in Year 4 this half term is amazing.

Let there be light!

We’ve had fun learning about electricity this half term. So far, we have explored electrical safety; what a conductor is and how we can draw, create and troubleshoot making an effective circuit powered by batteries with bulbs, wires and lights. Some teams worked out that two batteries would create a brighter light, whereas two lights and one battery would mean each light is dimmer. Next week, we will continue to build on this and learn about other conductors of electricity. The class loved getting practical and were so happy when they persevered as a team to light their bulb!
