Where does our electricity come from?

On Wednesday afternoons we have been following the topic “Winds of Change”. This week – which is Science Week – we had a look at how we generate electricity.

About two centuries ago, Michael Faraday discovered that if a magnet and a coil of wire moved passed each other an electric current was generated in the wire. We saw that if we shook a coil of wire with a magnet in the middle that a very small amount of electricity was made. By using a bigger coil or a stronger magnet or moving the magnet faster we could make more electricity. The next problem is, how do we make the magnet or coil move fast in order to make the electricity?

A model generator that showed how a moving coil in a magnetic field generates electricity

For the last hundred years we have burnt coal, oil, gas or biomass (dried plants) to heat water up turning it into steam which then turns big “fans” (the turbine) which turn a coil inside a circle of magnets.

We looked at how we can use the wind instead to turn the coil. We have been very fortunate to have some small wind turbines donated to us and we hope soon to have them set up in school to charge a battery, we will then use the electricity generated for other projects in the school garden.

World Book Day – Magical Maps

WBD this year was based on Narnia. We started the day staining paper to begin creating an ancient map, long forgotten in time. We then created our own magical kingdom on the map, thinking about the human and physical features that would exist there. After this, we plotted a base camp all the way to the place where Aslan was captured. The final part of our map making was to write some detailed instructions to the rest of our army on how to rescue Aslan!

Alice in Wonderland

Today, as part of early World Book Day celebrations, we were lucky enough to be joined by the West End Production company. Christie was fantastic and she guided us through an Alice in Wonderland themed dance, which incorporated action, freeze-frames and group work. The children loved it!

Spring 1

This half term been a total joy being a teacher to our wonderful class. The learning has been rich, powerful and creative. Seeing the class’s kindness, love, perseverance and sense of humour develop is such a privilege to be part of. Here is a roundup of our learning environments that we have used constantly.

Night lights

Today we were ACE Designers and made night lights. We explored the purpose, knowledge required and design process first before making them all afternoon. On Monday, we will create our own electrical circuits and test them within the nightlights to evaluate their effectiveness!

….and that’s a wrap!

I am so proud of 4SH. The class have accomplished so much in the last eight days and their final performances of the dance, song and poem were fantastic. A special shout-out to Jeremiah and Kara who were so confident when performing their story and rap around fear, emotions and identity. You blew everyone away. Well done everyone. Thank you to all of the adults who came to celebrate the children’s learning, the adults who have supported and the ACE role models.

Arts Fortnight – Week 1

What a brilliant week we’ve had. It often feels like a ‘pinch me’ moment in school because of how lucky we are to have access to both a fantastic art and dance studio. We are also extremely lucky to have the skill and expertise of our Art guru Mrs Johnston and our dance guru Miss Patchett.

Our fortnight revolves around the theme of Identity. This first week has consisted of exploring different fears and how we can represent them through poetry, dance and art. Our dance is representing the struggle of having certain fears but working on the strengths you have as an individual to overcome them. I love how everyone has risen to the challenge of pushing themselves out of the box and what has been made this week has been incredible. I can’t believe we have achieved so much in just three days! Here are some photos to capture the week.

Mosaics

We had such a brilliant day in the Art Studio this week making mosaics. There were so many steps involved in the process that the children listened to carefully, considerately and with a creative perspective. We made our hearts to represent a loved one lost from COVID-19 or since then. This may be someone we know personally or from the school community. It was a very special day and we will be grouting the hearts to our outdoor memory area very soon.

Masterchef

What a day we’ve had! Exploring seasonality of vegetables last week in our safe ACES lesson, we saw the whole pizza making process through from the preparation of the dough; the chopping and peeling of the vegetables; the preparation of the base and toppings and cooking the final product! The children loved eating them and tomorrow we will evaluate what went well and what could be better.
